The Hamlet of Lonton is 1 mile from the beautiful village of Middleton in Teesdale, where you’ll find a local butcher, an excellent Fish & Chip shop, pizza take away, an antique shop, 2 pubs – The Teesdale Hotel & The Foresters Bar and Restaurant, who both serve food. There’s several little cafe’s in the village notably, Samuel James Delicatesen & Cafe: they serve delicious food and a great selection of home made cakes. There’s also a tourist information point, a pharmacy and a late night Co-op grocery store open everday from 7am til 10pm.
Mickleton is also just one mile the other way by car or a short walk along the disused railway track and has a lovely traditional pub, The Blacksmiths Arms that offers homemade wood fired pizza’s to eat in or take away. LOOK OUT FOR: The Crown in Mickleton – fantastic ‘pop up’ street food to take away or eat in their beer garden.
For a more special occassion dinner or Sunday Lunch we would highly recommend the Rose & Crown in Romaldkirk, gorgeous food within a beautiful setting (just 2.5 miles) – Please do book in advance!
Cotherstone is the next village along from Romaldkirk, here you’ll find the Fox and Hounds, a well known Teesdale pub for hearty home cooked food, a good pint and craic at the bar with the locals.
Barnard Castle is a bustling farmers market town with a superb offering of antique shops, bakers and eateries – just 9 miles from Lonton. If you’re looking for a spot of lunch visit Blagraves Restaurant. A fabulously quirky little restaurant with an amazing inner courtyard. There are riverbank and woodland walks near to the castle or visit the The Bowes Museum (our very own French Château in the Dale) with rolling exhibitions and superb café – this really is a must if you have the time.
Raby Castle is also just a few miles away from Barnard Castle and is a stunning location with it’s beautiful gardens, restaurant, cafe and roaming wild deer.
